A
drawstring is a
cord or ribbon that runs through a hem or casing and is
pulled to tighten or close an opening.
Drawstrings are made of a large
variety of materials such as cotton, polyester, nylon, chenille and other
fabrics. Cotton drawstrings are the most popular of all, as they are durable
and anti-allergic and can be used for varied purposes.

Many types of narrow fabrics can be used as drawstring such as cords,
elastics, braids, leather, ribbons, and even strips of fabrics. There are, however different techniques used for pulling strings. For example, safety pins or the tools known as bodkins are used to pull the drawstring through its casing. Sometimes only knots are tied at the ends of a drawstring to avoid it from getting inside the casing such as those provided in pants and sweatshirts. Other types of drawstrings have a plastic structure which is called lock and is mostly used in drawstrings meant for backpacks and purses etc.
